Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin stated Wednesday that he was “very glad” Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota remained unharmed after a protester sprayed a liquid on her during an event, calling for the suspect to be prosecuted “to the full extent of the law.”

Johnson emphasized that such incidents should be treated as serious crimes without political exceptions when public officials are targeted. He said he expects Minneapolis authorities to act decisively against the attacker.

“I want to see that individual prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” Johnson said, describing what voters expect from government officials.

He contrasted Republican and Democratic priorities, arguing Republicans prioritize public safety while Democrats often show leniency in such cases. Johnson suggested that if a Republican member of Congress had been attacked similarly, local authorities might release the suspect rather than cooperate with federal immigration efforts.

Johnson also criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for “doubling down” on noncooperation with federal immigration agencies, claiming sanctuary cities create conditions for disorder and allow criminals to enter communities unimpeded. He blamed Democratic policies on open borders for recent unrest in Minnesota, stating Americans elected President Donald Trump because they opposed such policies.

“You have this problem where you have sanctuary cities who have welcomed illegal immigrants and criminals into their cities, and then they shield them,” Johnson said.

Johnson described the current political climate as “ginned up by the radical left” and warned that incitement can quickly lead to tragic outcomes.
