Minnesota Governor Walz Accuses Trump Administration of Misconduct in Border Patrol Shooting Investigation
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has accused the Trump administration of mishandling the investigation into the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on Saturday.
In an interview with NBC News, Walz described the administration’s role as “wrong on so many levels,” stating it was “the last thing we want.”
President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday that a comprehensive investigation would be launched into Pretti’s killing—a protester and ICU nurse. The president also emphasized he would personally oversee the probe, declaring his intent to ensure an “honorable and honest” outcome.
Walz has previously called for Minnesota to lead the investigation, but Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, reported federal agents blocked his agency from the crime scene even after securing a signed judicial warrant. Despite discussions with Trump and border czar Tom Homan, Walz stated federal agents have not yet left the state.
The president had previously directed Walz to implement three specific measures: turning over all criminal illegal aliens in state prisons and local jails—including those with active warrants or criminal records—to federal authorities for immediate deportation; transferring all such arrests into federal custody; and requiring local police to actively assist federal agents in apprehending wanted individuals, particularly those charged with violent offenses.
Walz’s office confirmed that he and Homan “will continue working toward those goals,” which the president had agreed to earlier that day. The governor has also called for an impartial investigation into the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.
