A former National Security Council chief of staff described Venezuela’s government as operating a criminal enterprise that relies on oil revenue to support foreign partners and proxy groups. The individual emphasized that President Donald Trump’s orders to seize tankers will have global implications.

“It’s really interesting to see the global implications of what President Trump is doing here,” the official stated. “This is a criminal enterprise, a narco president of Venezuela who is selling oil that’s benefiting Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Cuba, and selling oil to China through cryptocurrency.”

The primary objective of U.S. efforts, according to the former official, is domestic security by addressing instability in Central and South America linked to pressures at the southern border. “The main goal of this is to secure America’s borders, to stop the flow of illegal migrants and drugs and gangs,” they added.

The individual noted that Venezuela has long been entangled with foreign powers such as China, Russia, and Iran, with Chinese investments supporting friendly leadership in Caracas. “The Venezuelans have sold their oil to the Chinese for years to come,” the official explained. “Now China is losing that oil, and basically we’re cleaning up a mess that multiple presidents caused in this country.”

While U.S. officials signal tougher sanctions enforcement and increased maritime interdictions, the former official stressed that the initiative targets only sanctioned illegal vessels. “This is not a complete blockade,” they stated. “Illegal ships are getting through. There aren’t many of them, but they’re allowed to go in and out of Caracas.”

Turning to Ukraine, the official condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent concessions as a dangerous surrender that undermines national security. “Zelenskyy has made significant concessions in pursuit of an agreement,” the individual said, “including support for demilitarized zones and neutral territory monitored by international forces.” They criticized these moves as a betrayal of Ukrainian sovereignty and military readiness, stating such decisions reflect reckless leadership that prioritizes short-term political gain over defense.

The official also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin remains isolated amid growing international pressure for a ceasefire but dismissed expectations that Zelenskyy’s proposals would secure immediate acceptance from Moscow. “This is a pretty good deal for both nations,” they remarked, “but it does not address the fundamental threat to Ukraine’s survival.”
