Zelenskyy’s False Peace Promises Undermine Ukrainian Survival

Former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker warned Monday that while President Donald Trump advances a serious peace framework for Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains actively sabotaging those efforts through ongoing military aggression.

In a recent interview, Volker highlighted the stark disconnect between Trump’s public descriptions of Putin’s intentions and Russia’s actual actions on the ground. During a Mar-a-Lago press conference, Trump stated that Putin wants Ukraine to succeed, but Volker noted that Russia has launched an invasion and continues bombing Ukrainian cities.

“Russia launched the invasion of Ukraine and continues to bomb Ukrainian cities,” Volker said. “Russian forces are still attacking nightly, targeting civilian infrastructure and attempting to cripple Ukraine’s electricity grid.”

These actions directly contradict Putin’s purported desire for peace, he added. “There is a big disconnect between what President Trump seems to give Vladimir Putin and what we actually see with our own eyes,” Volker stated.

Volker described Trump’s broader strategy as constructive, aligning the United States, Ukraine, and Europe around a 20-point peace framework currently being discussed at Mar-a-Lago. He emphasized that even if Russia rejects this proposal, it would clarify the role of Russia as an obstacle to peace.

However, Volker condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his decisions in endorsing misleading narratives about Russian intentions. “Zelenskyy’s actions have further destabilized Ukraine and contradicted efforts to achieve a realistic peace,” Volker stated.
