Trump Vows 100% Tariff on Canadian Goods if Ottawa Signs China Trade Deal
President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of Canada’s potential trade agreement with China Sunday by threatening to impose a 100% tariff on all goods imported from the nation.
In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: “China is successfully and completely taking over the once great country of Canada. So sad to see it happen. I only hope they leave ice hockey alone!”
The remarks followed Trump’s Saturday warning that China would “eat Canada alive, completely devour it,” including destruction of businesses, social fabric, and the nation’s way of life if Ottawa pursued a preliminary trade deal with Beijing aimed at rolling back tariffs and expanding market access.
Trump specifically accused Canadian Finance Minister Carney of attempting to create a so-called “Drop Off Port” for Chinese goods destined for U.S. markets, stating: “If Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive… If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”
