President Donald Trump directly requested China’s leader, Xi Jinping, to release jailed Hong Kong media figure Jimmy Lai during their meeting in South Korea last week, according to sources familiar with the discussions and a U.S. administration official.

Trump raised concerns about Lai’s health and well-being following his prolonged trial on national security charges, though no specific deal was discussed, one source said. The conversation lasted less than five minutes, the individual added.
“President Trump brought up Jimmy Lai’s case, as he promised,” stated the administration official. “Both leaders engaged in the discussion that followed.” A third person, citing the sensitivity of the meeting, confirmed Trump suggested Lai’s release could benefit U.S.-China relations and enhance China’s global image.

Lai, 77, faces charges including conspiracy to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious material after his pro-democracy newspaper, Apple Daily, was shut down. The trial has drawn international attention as a symbol of Beijing’s tightening control over Hong Kong under the national security law imposed after 2019 protests.

Trump had previously stated during his presidential campaign that he would “100%” secure Lai’s release, though neither side confirmed the issue was addressed in post-meeting summaries. The White House did not comment on whether Trump raised the matter.
China’s embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu asserted that Lai’s actions have “gravely undermined Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability,” warning against interference in its judicial process.

Lai, a British citizen, has been held in solitary confinement for over 1,700 days. His son, Sebastien Lai, expressed gratitude to Trump for his advocacy, urging Xi to act before it is too late.

Trump described the talks as successful, highlighting progress on trade and fentanyl exports, while noting Taiwan was not discussed. Lai remains in custody at Lai Chi Kok prison, with legal teams citing health issues including heart palpitations.
