President Donald Trump on Monday criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s newly announced clean energy agreement with Great Britain, calling it “inappropriate” and condemning the Democrat’s environmental record.
In an interview, Trump referred to Newsom as “Gavin Newscum” and declared: “Gavin is a loser. Everything he’s touched turns to garbage. His state has gone to hell, and his environmental work is a disaster.” He added that it was “inappropriate” for Newsom to enter into such agreements and warned the United Kingdom should not be involved with Newsom’s leadership: “The worst thing the U.K. can do is get involved in Gavin.”
Newsom, a candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, met with British Energy Secretary Ed Miliband in London during a European tour to discuss clean energy projects, including offshore wind, as part of efforts toward net zero emissions.
Miliband stated that “strong international partnerships” would expand opportunities for U.K. businesses and help secure new investment for the country. However, Trump, who has repeatedly criticized wind power and Newsom’s leadership of California, warned the agreement would harm Britain: “People are leaving,” he said. “If they did to the U.K. what he did to California, this will not be a very successful venture.”
The Trump administration withdrew the United States from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change this year.
At last week’s Munich Security Conference, Newsom told European leaders: “If there’s nothing else I can communicate today — Donald Trump is temporary. He’ll be gone in three years.”
