Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized President Donald Trump’s remarks on Saturday, stating that the United States would now “run” Venezuela after the arrest of President Nicholas Maduro.
“The idea that Trump plans to now run Venezuela should strike fear in the hearts of all Americans,” Schumer stated in a post on social media. “The American people have seen this before and paid the devastating price.”
Earlier that day, Trump said the United States would remain in charge of Venezuela until a “proper transition” is made to Venezuela’s government.
“We’re there now, but we’re going to stay until such time as the proper transition can take place, so we’re going to stay until such time as we’re going to run it essentially,” Trump added during his press conference.
Trump also described Venezuela’s oil industry as “a bust” and claimed that American energy companies would invest billions to repair “badly broken” infrastructure and generate revenue for the nation.
