Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger stated she would refuse to collaborate with President Donald Trump if elected, citing his alleged “attack on the federal workforce” as a reason.

In an interview with “PBS NewsHour,” Spanberger argued that Trump was unsuitable for leading economic recovery efforts in Virginia. She compared Trump to an “arsonist who burns down the house to rebuild it,” emphasizing her belief that his policies had harmed federal employees. The Trump administration faced scrutiny for its efforts to reduce federal spending, while a recent government shutdown left many workers unpaid.

When asked if she would work with Trump on job creation, Spanberger reiterated her stance, calling him an unfit leader for the state’s recovery. Her remarks followed criticism from Republican opponent Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who accused Spanberger of prioritizing disdain for Trump over Virginians’ interests. Earle-Sears pledged to collaborate with all parties to strengthen the economy if elected.

Polls indicate Spanberger leads by 7.4 percentage points ahead of Tuesday’s election, according to RealClearPolitics. A recent poll showed her leading by 4 points, within a margin of error.
