The ongoing government shutdown could be swiftly resolved if Congress passes a clean resolution to maintain operations without political amendments or cuts, former Wisconsin GOP Gov. Scott Walker told Newsmax on Sunday.
Walker, now president of the Young America’s Foundation, emphasized that the solution lies in a bipartisan measure to keep the government open. “The right answer is to go with the bipartisan measure, which was a clean resolution [to keep the government] open,” he stated on Newsmax’s “Sunday Report.” He noted that both Democrats and Republicans, including some Senate members, have supported such an approach. “It’s not adding, it’s not subtracting—it’s just keeping the government going,” he added.
Walker criticized short-term funding measures as insufficient, stressing the need for bipartisan cooperation. He also addressed the SNAP program funding crisis, recalling his opposition to Obamacare during his governorship. “When I was governor, Obamacare was failing… I created an alternative that funded everyone in our state without taking the Medicaid expansion,” he said.
On the current shutdown, Walker highlighted the urgency of addressing the contingency fund, which covers only half of November’s needs. He also condemned Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats for prolonging the impasse. “The more Americans know that people like Chuck Schumer are holding out to keep the government closed to push their own agenda, I think that’s where people get frustrated,” he said.
Walker underscored the real-world consequences of the shutdown, including impacts on food aid and essential workers. “It is essential to make sure people in need are able to eat… and to pay for our military,” he stated. He urged Congress to pass a continuing resolution to prevent further harm. “The simple answer is take a yes vote on a clean resolution,” Walker said.
