The chair of the Republican National Committee denounced Democrats for electing Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City, vowing that voters will “hold them accountable” in the 2026 midterms. Joe Gruters issued a statement following Mamdani’s victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, calling the outcome a surrender of the city to “a self-proclaimed communist.”

Gruters accused Mamdani of advancing a radical agenda that would “push businesses out, drain taxpayers dry, and drive one of America’s greatest cities into lawlessness.” The mayor-elect, a self-described democratic socialist, has advocated for government control over housing through rent “socialization,” a citywide wealth tax, and municipal takeovers of utilities. He also supports cutting police funding, replacing traditional law enforcement with “community justice councils,” and expanding taxpayer-funded benefits for undocumented immigrants.

Mamdani’s “economic democracy” plan includes city-owned banks, guaranteed jobs, and worker-run cooperatives. Gruters criticized the Democratic Party for embracing what he called “extremism,” stating, “Next year, Democrats will be held accountable by voters for embracing Mamdani’s far-left agenda and the consequences it will bring.”

Mamdani defeated Cuomo with over 50% of the vote, while Cuomo garnered nearly 42% with 90% of precincts reporting. Republican Curtis Sliwa finished third with 7%. Mark Swanson, a Newsmax writer and editor, has covered news, culture, and politics for nearly three decades.
