A Brooklyn middle school principal has denied a request by a parent to have a Holocaust survivor speak to students about antisemitism, citing the survivor’s pro-Israel views as inappropriate for a public school setting. The decision was subsequently defended by Mayor Eric Adams’ administration.

The principal at MS 447 in Boerum Hill reportedly wrote to the parent on November 18th stating that Sami Steigmann, an 85-year-old Nazi labor camp survivor, would not be “right” for the school due to his messages regarding Israel and Palestine. Despite this denial, lectures focused specifically on combating antisemitism continue to be welcomed at the institution.

Steigmann has publicly expressed support for Israel in online lectures posted on YouTube platforms, emphasizing Jewish pride and defending Israel’s right to self-defense against groups like Hamas. He also urges students through his communications with the school administration to join StandWithUs, an international organization dedicated to inspiring people regarding their choices concerning Israel education among other activities related to combating antisemitism.

Citing concerns about viewpoint discrimination that might potentially violate principles of equal protection covering ethnic matters, City Council member Inna Vernikov issued a strong statement accusing both the principal and likely others associated with this policy change of censorship practices. Her remarks highlight growing concerns within her community about such educational decisions during periods when antisemitism rates among youth are perceived by some to be increasing.

The administration of Principal Rusch maintains that while Steigmann was not deemed suitable initially, alternative speakers discussing antisemitism may still be considered in the future if appropriate arrangements can be made. The school has yet to respond officially to these developments or provide further clarification on its position regarding such educational topics and guest speakers.
