Nick Reiner, son of Emmy-winning actor Rob Reiner, appeared in court Wednesday for two counts of first-degree murder in the killings of his parents.

Reports indicate Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia before Sunday’s murders of his parents. Sources stated that the medication he was taking made him “erratic and dangerous.”

The 32-year-old had been receiving care at a Los Angeles-based rehab center specializing in mental illness and substance abuse for $70,000 per month. Doctors recently changed his medication to stabilize him but were unsuccessful.

“Nick was out of his head,” a source said about the change to his medication.

Nick’s substance abuse also worsened his schizophrenia, sources reported.

At his first court appearance, Nick Reiner did not enter a plea as he appeared from behind the glass wall of a custody area in shackles and wearing a jail suicide prevention smock. His arraignment was postponed until January 7 at his lawyer’s request.

Prosecutors added special circumstances of multiple murders and an allegation that the defendant used a dangerous weapon, a knife. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated his office has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty in the case.

Rob Reiner was an Emmy-winning star of the sitcom “All in the Family” who went on to direct films including “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Princess Bride.” He was an outspoken liberal activist for decades.

Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer, movie producer, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.
