More Americans support President Donald Trump’s decision to capture Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro than oppose it, according to a poll released Tuesday.
The survey found that 43% of registered voters backed Trump’s military action over the weekend, while 36% opposed it. The operation was also seen as overwhelmingly successful by respondents, with 54% rating it as going well and only 15% calling it a failure—31% were unsure.
Among Republican voters, 78% supported Trump’s actions compared to 8% who opposed them. Democrats showed more resistance, with only 17% backing the military intervention and 57% opposing it. Independent voters split nearly evenly, with 39% supporting and 38% opposing Trump’s decision.
Trump’s statement that the United States would be “running” Venezuela for the immediate future drew significant concern from Democrats, who expressed worry about the policy. Eighty-five percent of Democrats voiced concern on the issue, while only 7% felt little to no concern. Among Republicans, 52% reported having little to no concern about Trump’s statement, but 40% expressed some worry.
The poll, conducted by J.L. Partners with a sample of 999 registered voters from January 5-6, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
