Knox County Mayor Calls SNAP Restrictions on Sugary Drinks a “Common-Sense Reform”
Knox County, Tennessee Mayor Glenn Jacobs, a WWE Hall of Fame wrestler, has described a proposed rule that would block Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients from using benefits to purchase soda and sugary foods as a “common-sense reform” that aligns with the program’s original purpose and respects taxpayers.
The mayor noted that approximately one in 10 Tennesseans receives SNAP benefits, and Knox County ranks third in the state for beneficiaries. He emphasized this timing coincides with federal officials considering a rule prohibiting SNAP users from buying items listing sugar, corn syrup, or high-fructose corn syrup as the first ingredient.
“First of all, we say SNAP benefits,” Jacobs said during his remarks. “This is food stamps—it’s what we used to call the program.” He added that such reforms are necessary because some individuals “are on the edge and paying taxes so other people can buy candy bars and soda.”
Jacobs also highlighted public health concerns, stating lower-income Americans are more likely to be obese and sugary drinks a contributing factor. “You know, one of the issues with government welfare,” he explained, “is you get into this generational cycle.”
The mayor stressed that SNAP was never designed as a permanent solution: “It’s really to help people survive through a tough period and get back on their feet—not for things like these sugary foods that we’re talking about.”
Jacobs urged Republicans to take action on the issue, noting that reducing government spending and regulation would lead to lower prices and improved economic conditions. He also addressed John Cena’s upcoming final WWE match, calling him “at the very top” after two decades as WWE’s face.
