Jimmy Kimmel Expresses Desire to Invite Donald Trump for Show, Sparks Controversy
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel revealed during a Bloomberg interview that he “would love” to have former president Donald Trump as a guest on his show, stating he would ask the president to appear. The comedian made the remarks following his return to television after a weeklong suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which occurred amid backlash over comments about conservative figure Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Kimmel defended his earlier remarks, claiming they were “maliciously mischaracterized,” and highlighted the challenges of navigating comedy in today’s polarized climate. He described Trump as a constant presence on television, noting that the former president provides ample material for media coverage. “I’d love to have Trump on the show, for sure. Alright, I’ll ask him,” Kimmel said.
The potential invitation comes amid ongoing tensions between Kimmel and Trump. Last month, Trump publicly celebrated Kimmel’s temporary removal from ABC, claiming the host had been fired for “lack of talent.” After Disney-owned ABC reinstated Kimmel following “thoughtful conversations,” Trump criticized the network, accusing it of bias.
ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 17 due to pressure from Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr and backlash from affiliates, including Sinclair Broadcast Group. The blackout left viewers in major markets like Washington, D.C., and Seattle without the show, igniting debates about political influence over programming.
Kimmel addressed the controversy upon his return, emphasizing that he never intended to mock the assassination of a young man. However, his apology faced harsh criticism from conservative figures and Kirk’s associates, who labeled it insincere. Actor James Woods also condemned Kimmel’s rhetoric for escalating hostility toward conservatives.
