Veteran Israeli diplomat Shahar Azani accused newly inaugurated New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani of being driven by deep-seated hatred and animosity toward Israel and the Jewish community, stating on Thursday that Mamdani is “incubated in hatred.” Azani argued that the mayor has consistently expressed anti-Israel views that cross into animosity against a significant portion of the city’s Jewish population.

Azani highlighted remarks Mamdani made years ago comparing New York Police Department actions to those of the Israel Defense Forces, stating: “When ‘the boot of the NYPD is on your neck, it’s been laced by the IDF.’” According to Azani, this comment was not a momentary lapse but an enduring reflection of Mamdani’s worldview. He emphasized that Mamdani “means what he says,” framing these statements as serious ideological positions rather than rhetorical flourishes.

Beyond rhetoric, Azani criticized Mamdani’s policy record as a collection of empty promises and failed ideas. He warned that the greater concern lies in the mayor’s ideological environment, noting that more than 20% of his transition team consists of individuals he labeled as extremists, anti-American, anti-Israeli, and anti-Jewish. Azani stressed that leadership is defined not only by the individual at the top but also by those empowered under their influence, asserting that Mamdani’s inner circle reflects values threatening New York’s cultural and civic fabric.

Azani urged New Yorkers to approach Mamdani’s public persona with skepticism, advising: “Let us be wary and not beguiled by empty smiles and promises.” He warned that the mayor’s ideology poses a danger extending beyond City Hall, potentially endangering “the very spirit and soul” of America.
