House Republicans have announced plans to compel Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, to testify as part of a GOP-led oversight effort investigating allegations of massive fraud tied to government programs in the state, Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., stated Tuesday.

Last week, independent journalist Nick Shirley reported that Minnesota daycare centers fraudulently siphoned large sums of federal subsidies while failing to provide services. Whistleblowers said they warned state officials about the alleged scheme and loopholes but their concerns were dismissed.

During a recent interview, Biggs said, “We’re going to have to bring in Tim Walz.” He added that investigators would also request testimony from Walz’s adjutants and documents to determine who knew what, when fraud occurred, and whether whistleblowers were ignored.

Biggs emphasized the oversight committee’s role in conducting investigations and making referrals to the executive branch, noting such actions could address compliance failures when state agencies ignore warnings. He warned that the issue may extend beyond Minnesota, highlighting vulnerabilities in taxpayer-funded systems nationwide.

“The type of thing where you just say that is why you get yourself into massive national debt,” Biggs said. “You have a structural deficit that can’t be closed. It’s because people are grifting so much everywhere.”

Biggs did not specify a timeline but indicated the next step would involve gathering testimony and records to establish facts for potential referrals. He stressed the need to protect whistleblowers who report wrongdoing, stating officials must take such warnings seriously without punishing those raising concerns.

Biggs’ remarks come as congressional Republicans intensify efforts to address alleged waste, fraud, and abuse in public spending. For him, compelling Walz and his aides to appear is a critical step toward accountability.

“I don’t want to sound prejudiced or biased at the start of this thing,” Biggs said. “But this is incredible.”
