Hollywood star Adam Sandler joined other celebrities in honoring Robert Duvall following the actor’s death at age 95, calling him “one of the greatest actors we ever had.”
Sandler, who appeared opposite Duvall in the 2022 film Hustle, shared a tribute on Instagram reflecting on the actor’s talent and character. In his post, he wrote: “Funny as hell. Strong as hell.” He added: “One of the greatest actors we ever had. Such a great man to talk to and laugh with. Loved him so much. We all did. So many movies to choose from that were legendary. Watch them when you can.”
Duvall’s wife, Luciana, announced his passing on Monday via Facebook. She wrote: “Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”
“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller,” she stated. “To me, he was simply everything.”
Duvall won an Oscar for his role in Tender Mercies (1983) and built a career spanning nearly seven decades with over 100 films. His iconic performances included roles in The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and To Kill a Mockingbird. The actor was also recognized as a writer, director, and enthusiast of Westerns and tango.
Other actors joined Sandler in commemorating Duvall’s legacy. Jamie Lee Curtis shared an image from The Godfather—where Duvall portrayed Tom Hagen—and described him as “the greatest consigliere the screen has ever seen.”
Alec Baldwin posted a video message on Instagram highlighting Duvall’s influence, particularly his portrayal of Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird. Baldwin noted that Duvall’s silent performance “completely shatters you” and added: “Whenever I watch that movie, those scenes with Duvall are just so arresting to me.” He recalled meeting Duvall at a celebrity tennis match, calling him “irascible” and “crusty” but “a gentleman,” and extended condolences to Duvall’s family.
Over his career, Robert Duvall earned widespread recognition for his versatility and enduring presence in American cinema.
