Florida Mandates English Proficiency for Driver’s Licenses Following Deadly Crash
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated Thursday that it is paramount for drivers to know English following a series of deadly crashes involving illegal aliens.
Starting Friday, tests to obtain a driver’s license in Florida will be conducted exclusively in English.
Last August, a fatal crash on the Florida Turnpike killed three people after an illegal alien made an illegal U-turn.
“For a long time now, we’ve prohibited illegal aliens from obtaining any driver’s license, much less a trucker’s license,” Uthmeier said during an appearance on “Ed Henry The Big Take.”
“But this tragedy, this guy that drove from California, really highlighted how dangerous the situation is across the country,” he added.
“A lot of other states, a lot of these licensed providers giving out licenses to people that do not speak English, that cannot even read road signs,” Uthmeier continued.
“So in Florida, we’ve got a good situation going, but we’re going to further heighten the protections to make sure if you’re behind the wheel of a dangerous vehicle, you better know how to speak English,” Uthmeier said.
Uthmeier also noted that cities not cooperating with federal authorities in enforcing immigration law continue to be a problem.
“They bring in illegals and then they leave, and they spread and they drive big trucks into other states, endangering great states like Florida that enforce rule of law,” he stated.
“Our state and local law enforcement work hand in hand with ICE,” Uthmeier added, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
