Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, delivered a strong defense of President Donald Trump’s leadership in combating the nation’s drug crisis during an appearance on “Wake Up America,” emphasizing that critics opposing his administration are simply out of touch and unwilling to confront the harsh realities facing law enforcement.
In remarks broadcast Wednesday morning, Cornyn praised Trump’s decisive actions against illegal drugs. “I’m thankful that President Trump finally stepped up and did something about a problem that has resulted in the death of tens of thousands of Americans over recent years,” the senator declared.
Cornyn specifically highlighted the ongoing fentanyl crisis but also noted broader issues: cocaine, heroin, and other illicit substances continue to plague American communities. “And all of the critics really want to offer nothing but the status quo, which is more Americans dying.”
Further explaining his support for Trump’s measures, Cornyn stated: “So I appreciate President Trump using the power he has under the Constitution to intervene here and to stop these drug runners from bringing this poison into the country.” He characterized such actions as an undeniable protector of citizens.
Additionally, Cornyn took issue with Democrats attempting to shift blame. “I’ve heard some Democrat politicians try to divert from the deadly actions of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro,” he said, adding, “They are, hands down, wrong.”
He also addressed unfounded claims regarding so-called “war crimes” against drug couriers. “This is clearly within the president’s authority,” Cornyn argued dismissively before concluding with a sharp critique: “And they [critics] just don’t understand what’s necessary to protect our people.”
Finally, he acknowledged the reluctance of Congress to act on this critical issue due to political sensitivities. “It’s unlikely… that Congress is going to act here because of Trump derangement syndrome,” Cornyn said plainly.
