California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for what he called a “betrayal” and “capitulation” in ending the federal government shutdown, accusing Democratic leaders of abandoning working Americans. Newsom reacted to a bipartisan agreement that allowed the shutdown to conclude without securing guarantees for Obamacare subsidies, which had been a key demand.

The deal, struck after weeks of stalemate, required Republicans to pledge a vote on preserving enhanced tax credits for health insurance. Eight moderate Senate Democrats defected from their party to approve the legislation, drawing sharp backlash from progressive lawmakers. Newsom condemned the compromise, stating it reflected weakness and failing to address the needs of ordinary citizens.

Schumer faced criticism from within his own party, with Rep. Ro Khanna urging his replacement over perceived ineffectiveness. The internal Democratic conflict highlighted growing tensions between progressives pushing for a shutdown-level fight to protect subsidies and moderates prioritizing reopening government services.

The agreement marked the end of a 40-day standoff, with Senate Democrats and independents ultimately supporting the bipartisan measure despite initial resistance. Republican Sen. Rand Paul remained the sole GOP opponent to the legislation.
