Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark criticized Russia’s recent diplomatic overtures during an interview with Newsmax, calling them a deliberate strategy to mislead Western nations. Speaking on “American Agenda,” Clark stated that Moscow’s request for talks is part of a broader effort to create the illusion of progress while advancing its military objectives.

Clark described the approach as a calculated maneuver: “They push on the ground, attack civilians and power infrastructure in the rear, and then talk diplomatically.” He emphasized that Russia’s long-term goal is to prolong the conflict, allowing it to destabilize Ukraine further while keeping Western allies uncertain.

The general argued that any negotiations with Russia at this stage should be viewed as an opportunity for intelligence gathering rather than a path to peace. “You’re not going to get a peace agreement,” he said, adding that such talks risk giving Moscow time to regroup and intensify its campaign. Clark also dismissed the likelihood of a ceasefire, stating, “You have to be prepared to protect your flanks when you go back home, because you may not get an agreement.”

The conflict in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, remains deadlocked as both sides maintain opposing demands. Russia insists on recognition of its control over occupied territories and restrictions on Kyiv’s military, while Ukraine rejects these terms as unacceptable. Recent diplomatic efforts, including prisoner exchanges, have failed to produce a lasting resolution.
