The Department of Homeland Security reported a historic decline in illegal border crossings, with October marking the lowest recorded level ever. Preliminary data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection revealed 30,561 total encounters last month, the smallest number for any October since records began. This figure represents a 29% decrease from the previous low in 2012 and an 79% drop compared to October 2024. For six consecutive months, Border Patrol agents have reported zero migrant releases, with all detained individuals processed according to the law.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem hailed the achievement, stating, “History made: the lowest border crossings in October history and the sixth straight month of ZERO releases. This is the most secure border ever.” She credited President Trump and DHS law enforcement for the results.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott emphasized the dedication of frontline personnel, calling their work “unmatched consistency” and vowing continued vigilance along the southwest border. He reiterated the agency’s focus on securing the nation without political distractions.
Since Trump returned to office, monthly apprehensions have averaged fewer than 10,000, a level not seen in decades. October’s total of 9,845 apprehensions was 62% lower than the previous October low in 2018. Daily averages on the southwest border dropped to 258, a 95% decrease from prior administrations. From January through October, encounters along the border totaled 106,134—below monthly averages under former President Joe Biden, who saw crossings routinely exceed 150,000 per month.
CBP attributed the decline to stricter enforcement measures and policy changes, including asylum and parole reforms. Final October statistics are pending, but officials insist the downward trend reflects a commitment to border security.
