Trump Presses Law and Order Agenda as Schumer Targets Government Reopening

President Donald Trump is advancing his multifaceted agenda to strengthen law enforcement, secure the border, and stimulate economic growth, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has focused on obstructing, denying, and delaying government operations, according to Rep. Mark Harris, R-N.C.
Harris stated that while Trump seeks policies promoting national security and economic recovery, Schumer’s primary objective is to halt progress and potentially shut down federal agencies. “The president is trying to move an agenda of law and order, trying to move an agenda that secures the border, trying to move an agenda that gets this economy up and running,” Harris explained during Tuesday’s discussion. “Chuck Schumer has one priority: to try to slow and stop everything he can and try to shut the government down.”
Harris noted that although the House is likely to pass a five-appropriation funding package extending until October 1, negotiations over the Department of Homeland Security’s continuing resolution—which previously followed bipartisan agreements—now face Democratic pushback. “Let me be clear: The body cams were already in the bill that we had passed originally,” Harris emphasized.
He further clarified that federal officer safety and accountability are critical priorities, stating, “The fact is that most of the time, the body cams certainly end up vindicating any officers involved in things like that. So that’s a good thing.”
Harris also condemned recent Democratic proposals as “nonstarters,” including judicial warrants and mask removal protocols, which he argued risk federal agents’ safety and operational effectiveness. “Anything that would hamstring the work of ICE or our federal agents is not going to go anywhere,” Harris said.
“We’re committed to keeping ICE doing their critical work,” Harris added. “They’re risking their lives every day, and we’re not willing to be part of petty political games that Chuck Schumer wants to play.”
