President Donald Trump has accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of obstructing plans to host an IndyCar race around the National Mall in August as part of events marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, according to a White House statement.

In an exclusive Oval Office interview with reporters, Trump said, “We can’t get Schumer. Schumer is making it very difficult.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has been pushing for the race, which would be an unusual event on the National Mall. The proposal requires congressional approval due to a ban on advertising on Capitol grounds.

Trump suggested that the issue of advertising near the Capitol is at the center of his dispute with Schumer.

“The cars have ads,” Trump added. “If you didn’t, they wouldn’t look as good, right? That’s the only reason.”

A spokesperson for Schumer said that the senator “has not taken a position on the race and is continuing to review the available information.”

The Department of Transportation stated that the event would be an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate American racing heritage, showcase the National Mall’s beauty, and generate millions in tourism revenue for Washington, D.C.

Trump also mentioned plans for a UFC fight on the White House South Lawn on June 14, which he said coincides with his 80th birthday. He called it one of the highest-profile events planned for the anniversary.

The Transportation Department emphasized its commitment to working with Congress to outline the positive impacts of the race and correct any inaccuracies in the record.
