A man who shattered windows and caused property damage at Vice President JD Vance’s home in Cincinnati was detained by the U.S. Secret Service early Monday morning, agency officials confirmed.

The incident occurred around midnight near Vance’s residence in the Walnut Hills neighborhood, east of downtown Cincinnati. Secret Service agents responded after hearing a loud noise and discovered an individual using a hammer to break windows with the intent to enter the home. The suspect also vandalized a Secret Service vehicle during his ascent up the property’s driveway.

Vance stated in an online post that he was not present at the time of the incident, having returned to Washington, D.C., earlier that day. He expressed gratitude for the rapid response from the Secret Service and Cincinnati Police Department but emphasized his family’s efforts to protect their children from the realities of public service. “I am skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows,” Vance wrote.

The suspect, identified as William Defoor, 26, has been arrested and charged with obstructing official business, criminal damage to property, endangering, criminal trespass, and vandalism. The home was unoccupied at the time, according to a U.S. Secret Service spokesperson. Authorities are coordinating with the Cincinnati Police Department and U.S. attorney’s office to review charging decisions.

Vance’s office confirmed his family had returned to Washington and directed questions to the Secret Service. The Walnut Hills neighborhood, known for its historic sites including the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, was unoccupied during the incident.
