Jimmy Kimmel delivered a pointed critique of President Donald Trump in Channel 4’s Christmas Day address, calling his second term “a really great year” from a fascist perspective and warning that “tyranny is booming.”

The comedian, who returned to television after ABC suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in September over comments about the shooting of conservative figure Charlie Kirk, stated he was back on air every night giving “the most powerful politician on earth a right and richly deserved bollocking” following a “Christmas miracle” when millions defended free speech.

Kimmel also addressed concerns about American democracy, noting that both the U.S. and the U.K. share a special relationship despite recent tensions. He expressed regret for the state of affairs in America, stating: “We are a right mess… and I just wanted to say sorry.”

The address followed Channel 4’s tradition of airing an alternative Christmas message since 1993, which has previously featured speakers including whistleblower Edward Snowden and former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Kimmel emphasized that silencing critics is not limited to authoritarian regimes but is occurring within the U.S., citing the recent demolition of the White House’s East Wing to make way for a ballroom as evidence of democratic erosion.
