Emma Thompson expressed frustration during a recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” regarding artificial intelligence tools attempting to “rewrite” her writing. The Oscar-winning writer and actor, known for her 1995 adaptation of “Sense & Sensibility,” described feeling “intense irritation” at AI’s interference.

Thompson explained that she writes longhand on a pad, emphasizing the connection between her brain and hand. She criticized Word documents that repeatedly suggest rewriting her work, leading to expletive-laden outbursts. “I don’t need you to rewrite what I’ve just written,” she said.

She recounted a past incident where a computer transformed her script into hieroglyphs, forcing her to seek help from friend Stephen Fry to recover the content. Thompson’s remarks align with growing resistance from Hollywood figures against generative AI in creative fields. Director Guillermo del Toro recently rejected AI, calling it “natural stupidity” and stating he would rather “die” than use it.
