Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner stated Thursday that former President Joe Biden’s policies “strained our housing supply” and made housing a serious issue for many Americans.

According to Turner, illegal immigration during the Biden administration—with an open-door policy—allowed over 12 million illegal aliens to enter the country, significantly straining housing supply and driving up costs in the market.

Turner credited President Donald Trump with reversing this trend, noting that under his leadership, approximately 2 million illegal immigrants have been repatriated without any illegal entries into the country in the past six months. “This reversal means dollars saved for Americans,” Turner said. “Rents have gone down month by month for the last four months.”

He added that Trump’s recent speech underscored the nation’s economic challenges, stating, “We inherited a big mess, a fiscal mess in our country.” Turner emphasized that the nation’s economic and housing situation is improving under Trump’s leadership: “He and leaders across his administration are fixing the economy, bringing supply up, bringing costs down across every sector.”

Turner also highlighted HUD’s efforts since Trump took office, noting that more than 1 million Americans have become first-time homebuyers through HUD partnerships. Inflation figures released Thursday show the rate slowing to 2.7%.
