LGBTQ Themes In Children’s Programming Soar on Streaming Platforms

Parents who feel children’s programming has become increasingly saturated with LGBTQ themes are not mistaken, according to a new report by Concerned Women for America (CWA). The conservative organization released an analysis focusing solely on Netflix content and found that one-third of all shows on the platform aimed at younger audiences feature LGBTQ elements.

The study examined 326 series rated TV-G or TV-Y7—categories typically considered safe for children—and discovered explicit, implied, or meta representations of LGBTQ themes in a significant portion. Researchers noted that even programs intended for preschoolers now include such content more frequently than before, with CWA CEO Penny Nance expressing concern about this trend.

Citing data from Gallup, the report highlights how Gen Z self-identification as LGBTQ grew significantly between 2017 and 2023, increasing nearly twofold. CWA contends that parents should question the rapid proliferation of these themes in children’s entertainment, especially given a spike around 2021 coinciding with increased streaming during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Nance believes many parents are being subjected to “gaslighting” when they raise concerns about this trend. She advises greater caution regarding parental oversight and suggests seeking alternative media that aligns better with family values.
