Two members of West Virginia’s National Guard were shot Wednesday in downtown Washington, D.C., near the White House. A suspect was taken into custody with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Initial reports from Gov. Patrick Morissey indicated the Guard members had died, but he later retracted the statement. “We are receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Morissey wrote. “Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.”
The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the scene at 17th and I Street was secure, with a suspect in custody. The suspect’s identity remains undisclosed. A law enforcement source stated the two guardsmen were shot in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect, one in the head. Emergency responders transported all three to hospitals, with one taken via med-evac helicopter and others by ambulances. No information was immediately shared about who opened fire or why.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the agency’s involvement in the investigation, stating, “Please pray for them and we will update with more information as we are.” An eyewitness reported hearing two shots followed by three more as people ran from the scene. Another witness noted a group of children near the area when the shooting began.
The National Guard prioritized the health and safety of its service members, stating it was working closely with law enforcement. A spokesperson for Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser indicated local leaders were monitoring the situation. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urged prayers for the two National Guardsmen shot in Washington, D.C.
